MAP OF ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR

The Province of Zamboanga del Sur with a total land area of 473,491 hectares and with a population of 932,447 is geographically located and occupying the western part of the island of Mindanao. It is located within longitude 122 degrees 54 minutes to 123 degrees 40 minutes east and latitude 7 degrees 22 minutes to 8 degrees 20 minutes. It is bounded in the north by the Province of Zamboanga del Norte, in the south by the Moro Gulf, in the southwest by the newly-created Province of Zamboanga Sibugay, in the east by the Province of Misamis Occidental, the Panguil Bay and a portion of Lanao del Sur Province.

--------Stretching northward from Sibugay Province in the southwest and running along the northern boundary onward to Salug Valley in the east is a mountanious country. The coastal plains are narrow strips extending regularly from the southwest, then spreading into wide flat lands when reaching the coastal plains of Baganian Peninsula in the southeast.

--------The Province which is carved out from the former Zamboanga Province that encompassed the entire peninsula in Southwestern Mindanao wherein on February 2001, a major change in the territorial jurisdiction of Zamboanga del Sur. Its inhabitants voted to create a new province out of the Third Congressional District-named Zamboanga Sibugay Province pursuant to Republic Act 8973 which embodies the legal creation of the said province.

--------The mother province is now left with 26 municipalities and one city and subdividied into two (2) congressional District. The 1 st District comprises eleven (11) municipalities and one (1) city while the 2 nd District is composed of fifteen (15) municipalities, with a total of six hundred eighty-seven (687) barangays. The main livelihood in the province are fishing, farming, mining, agriculture and livestock raising while its main products are coconut, rubber, coffee, tobacco, root crops, vegetable, banana, rice and corn.
